When you have a growing  number of people desperate to save their homes, it should come as no surprise that there is also a growing number of people looking to take advantage of that desperation. It doesn’t matter if you are facing foreclosure on your home or business, you must be aware of these scams and learn to avoid a foreclosure scam. For the most part, being taken by a scam artist will make your situation even worse.

Knowing how to avoid a foreclosure scam is important so that you can focus on getting yourself completely caught back up and back to being in good standing with your mortgage. It is possible for absolutely anyone to be tricked and taken advantage of when they are desperate and open to help, so be very careful who you trust. Avoid foreclosure scam artists by always looking critically at any help offered. What many homeowners do not realize is that court records that show the filing of foreclosure proceedings are public record, which means anyone can find them and come acting to provide relief, or some may completely break the law and tell you they are acting on behalf of your mortgage lender.

Recognizing a Scam

The biggest red flag is when someone calls or shows up on your doorstep without you initiating the discussion of help. Most of the people and organizations that are out there to truly help people do not make telemarketing calls asking if you would like their help. They do not have the time or resources to make telemarketing calls, so anyone that reaches you in this manner should be suspect. Take the companies name and contact information and make sure that you research the company very well before dealing with them. Most of these companies will check out to be a scam, and to help others avoid foreclosure scam artists you must report them to the appropriate authorities.

Reporting a scam quickly is the next step after you the foreclosure scam yourself. Many people do not realize the need to avoid foreclosure scam artists because they are more concerned with getting any help possible than finding reasons not to accept help. The scams we manage to spot and bypass will suck in many other people, and we can help those others out by reporting the scams we come across.
